Verizon Gets a Fix on 5G Trials

Feb 23, 2017, 00:42

Shares of Verizon were slightly higher Wednesday after the wireless carrier said it will start offering 5G pre-commercial services to pilot customers in 11 United States markets during H1.

5G provides speeds up to 40 times faster than 4G, and it's expected to eventually impact connected everything from self-driving cars to robots. In the fist half of 2017, Verizon said the proving ground for the service will encompass "several hundred cell sites that cover several thousand customer locations".

"We are pleased about the progress made with partners like Samsung on advancing 5G technology commercially", said Roger Gurnani, Executive Vice President and Chief Information and Technology Architect, Verizon. Samsung's 5G Access Units, installed throughout a city's business and residential neighborhoods, will link radio signals to a virtualized core network that is set up within Verizon's data centers.

Verizon has yet to comment on what kind of speeds the pilot cities will be experiencing. Service will land in Ann Arbor, Michigan; Atlanta, Georgia; Bernardsville, New Jersey; Brockton, Massachusetts; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Miami, Florida; Sacramento, California; Seattle, Washington, and Washington, D.C.by the middle of the year, according to the company, and will be modeled on the specifications determined by Verizon's 5G Technical Forum.

According to Adam Koeppe, Verizon's vice president of network planning, next-generation wireless technologies received a boost with the Federal Communication Commission's "aggressive action on 5G spectrum" a year ago.

Verizon's announcement comes shortly after AT&T described its plans for "5G evolution" testing in Austin and Indianapolis. Still, we've come a long way and AT&T and Verizon's latest moves bring us just one more step closer.

"5G technology innovation is rapidly evolving", said Adam Koeppe, Verizon's vice president of network planning, in a statement.
