SoundCloud Go Gets Cheaper At $5 Per Month

Mar 01, 2017, 00:35

The German-based company is looking to recruit new subscribers for on-demand streaming as competitors such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and YouTube Red continue to battle for market share.

"SoundCloud's unique mix of content, much of which can't be found anywhere else, is an incredibly attractive offering for music lovers who are at the forefront of what's happening now and driving what's next in music", said chief revenue officer Alison Moore in a press release.

Soundcloud writes, "The new SoundCloud Go plan gives you the first, fully on-demand listening experience at this price point".

The new tier will allow users to listen to SoundCloud's vast catalog of user-uploaded content (over 120 million tracks) offline and without ads, both on desktop and via mobile app.

Verizon Gets a Fix on 5G Trials
Verizon's announcement comes shortly after AT&T described its plans for "5G evolution" testing in Austin and Indianapolis . Verizon has yet to comment on what kind of speeds the pilot cities will be experiencing.

Apple, which charges $9.99 a month for its music-streaming service, has about 20 million subscribers, and Spotify has over 40 million. The ad-free offering is to be called SoundCloud Go, replacing the United States dollars 9.99 per month service of the same name launched in March previous year, which will now be called SoundCloud Go+. Additional product features for the Go+ service are expected to be announced later this year.

SoundCloud launched the original Go in late March 2016 after nailing down licensing deals with most recording stakeholders.

The company is introducing a "mid-priced subscription plan" that falls in between its free service and its industry-standard $9.99/month package. A month shy of the anniversary SoundCloud Go, the service is shuffling things a bit. The service is available in the US, UK, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Germany.

SoundCloud CEO Alex Ljung says that this new tier will enable the company to bring in more revenue as well as enhance the experience for listeners on its platform.
