Tamil Nadu traders boycott of cola kicks in

Mar 02, 2017, 00:43

Following relentless debates on health hazards of consuming Coke, Pepsi and other soft drinks, Tamil Nadu traders union on Wednesday suggested a boycott on consumption of Coke and Pepsi in the state.

"Many shopkeepers do not earn enough even to pay for electricity used to keep the drinks chilled", Mohan said, reflecting the sentiments of several shop owners.

Nevertheless, the sale of Pepsi and Coca-Cola has not stopped completely.

Furthermore, he stated that the soft drinks will be manufactured here after in India itself, as a replacement to the ones being circulated now in the market. We don't have any stock now. Retail outlets had displayed only Pepsi and Coke the past few weeks to clear the existing stocks. This store sold 15-18 cases (24 bottles each) of Pepsi and Coca-Cola per week. "That is why we chose to boycott American soft drinks in the state starting March 31", said an official of the traders' association. A majority of the colleges in Coimbatore have stopped sales of the drinks in their canteens.

The Indian Beverage Association serves as an inter-face between the industry, the government and the public, besides providing a unified and focused viewpoint on legislative and regulatory matters, said the press release.

San Diego Astronomer Finds More Earth-Sized Planets That Might Support Life

The traders say they have been partly spurred by the mass mobilisation that helped youths in Tamil Nadu to force the authorities to bow to them over Jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming sport that had been banned under directions from the Supreme Court.

"There are multiple reasons behind the boycott, but most important is how PETA tried to kill Jallikattu", T. Vellaiyan, president of Tamil Nadu Traders Associations, told AFP.

"The boycott call also violates the rights of consumer to exercise choice", the IBA said.

"Indian products are using the same water and making their products, but (that) profit is brought for our country itself and hence we want to support our own products", Raja added. The traders union has asserted that they are taking this decision to boycott Coke and Pepsi because it is harmful and contain germs.
