Nadal plays surging Querrey for Mexican Open title

Mar 06, 2017, 00:45

Rafael Nadal takes on unseeded Sam Querrey in the title match of the ongoing ATP Mexican Open in Acapulco on Saturday (Sunday morning, Singapore time).

Rafael Nadal rolled into the final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel with a 6-1, 6-2 beatdown of Marin Cilic on Friday night.

Nadal, the tournament victor in 2005 and 2013, had won 14 straight matches in Mexico.

Live streaming: The matches can be watched online on Tennis Channel Live, StarHub Go. Thanks to his dominance against Cilic, Nadal is now 14-0 lifetime at the tournament and through to a third final in as many appearances. Sure, he didn't capitalize on his best chance to break late in the second set, and woeful second serve returning cost him the match in the tiebreaker, but that's essentially asking him to play flawless tennis, considering how well other parts of his game were working. A victory would give the Spaniard his first hard court title since Qatar in 2014.

When asked what he thought of Krygios, Djokovic said: "He has a great serve, I hope he wins".

Nadal will face the American Querrey, a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victor over Australian Nick Kyrgios. But he seems to be on top of his game this week, having not lost a set.

"Sam is playing great, beating Goffin and Thiem. I believe that he had his chances, but I played a good game".

Querrey is ranked No.40 in the world, so he could be forgiven for having stage fright against one of the greatest tennis players ever, however, it was the American who won the first set in 29 minutes after breaking Nadal with a crosscourt backhand victor. "I really like playing here".

Querrey, 29, beat Nadal for the first time in five meetings between the pair, powering home 19 aces as the Spaniard had no answer to his power.
