97-year-old twin sisters likely froze to death steps from home

Two elderly twin sisters were found frozen to death at their waterside Rhode Island home on Friday.

"At this time investigators believe that foul play was not involved and Ms. Williams may have fallen in the driveway walking to her vehicle".

This past weekend, twins Jean Haley and Martha Williams died from hypothermia. Overnight temperatures in the area had dropped to as low as 11 degrees, with wind chills as low as minus 8. Their younger sister also lived in Barrington, but not as close as the twins lived to each other. The Providence Journal reported that Haley lived at 21 Opechee Drive, Barrington, and Williams lived in East Providence.

According to the Daily Mail, Martha Williams was found face down next to her vehicle.

They were rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Investigators believe Haley was walking through the garage to go inside and call for help when she tripped on a rug and fell, police said.

Police believe Williams and Haley returned home around 8.30pm on Friday evening.

Investigators believe that Williams, of East Providence, R.I., may have fallen in the driveway walking to her auto, according to a police statement.

Barrington Police Chief John M. LaCross offered his condolences to the victims' families Sunday.

Police officials do not believe that foul play is involved, as nothing was missing from home. As the temperature dipped below zero, the night grew colder.
