Mourinho fumes at Rostov pitch

Manchester United will play FC Rostov on Thursday in a crucial UEFA Europa League fixture and Jose Mourinho has more than one reason giving him a headache.

The home side had clearly targeted Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic which made it all the sweeter for the pair when they combined for United's 35 minute goal.

Rostov however equalised in the second-half through forward Aleksandr Bukharov, who latched on to Timofei Kalachev's pass, to ensure that it is all to play for in the second-leg next week.

UNITED drew 1-1 with Rostov at the Olimp-2 stadium, but who stood out?

United couldn't get themselves a second goal but they will go into the second leg at Old Trafford next week as favourites thanks to their away goal, though they must approach the game right to go through. Also the fact that they are used to playing on that pitch, and United are not, might give them a slight advantage.

Michael Carrick, Eric Bailly, Antonio Valencia, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata could be given a rest ahead of Monday's FA Cup clash with Chelsea.

The answer to the first question was that Mourinho would trial a formation he has rarely, if ever, used from the start of a game throughout his managerial career. We know that it will be a tough match and we need to win or have a 0-0 draw so the tie is open, but in these circumstances I think it is a positive result.

Manchester United gave as good as they got in the challenges and were victims of some bad play acting as well by Rostov. I don't know. I have now a lot to think because I was expecting something more playable.

Jose Mourinho and his men will be really confident ahead of this match given that Rostov have never faced an English team before, but the bigger concern prior to this match was the condition of the pitch.

"We conceded the goal and there was a mistake but we have a second game to come".

Having already scored twice on both his United debut and his first start in the Premier League, Rashford - a shy, 18-year-old local lad plucked from the under-19s to solve an injury crisis - would soon be an FA Cup victor and earning an England call-up for the European Championship.
