These schools are closed because of the women's strike today

Districts across the United States have canceled classes because of teachers who are participating in the protests, in which female employees stay home for the day to show the importance of women in the workplace.

Thousands of pupils will get a day off, because their teachers are joining the "Day Without A Woman" protest against Donald Trump and refusing to work on International Women's Day, forcing two USA districts to close all their schools.

Yet, many schools in Washington remain largely unaffected by the upcoming march. Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina announced last week they would close for the general strike, again due to the overwhelming number of staff members who requested the day off.

Hundreds of women assembled in solidarity outside of the City-County Building in Pittsburgh to support "A Day Without a Woman" on Wednesday.

The organizers say women who can't take off work are encouraged to wear red in solidarity. The district staff is 75% female. "The decision is based exclusively on our ability to provide sufficient staff to cover all our classrooms, and the impact of high staff absenteeism on student safety and delivery of instruction", district officials said in the statement.

Women 22News spoke with Wednesday said there is still a long way to go before there is true gender equality.

The Women's March on Washington organization has called on women to wear red, take the day off and avoid shopping to highlight their impact on the US economy. "Given the unusually high number of requests, this may be attributed to the observance of International Women's Day".

"We stand a danger of losing so much of what women have fought so hard to gain", she said. The day will be a teacher work day, Superintendent of Schools Alvin L. Crawley said in the announcement.

Today, the women of Gizmodo and io9 are joining our colleagues across Fusion Media Group to participate in the official "A Day Without a Woman" strike.

"This decision was not made to support any kind of demonstration or be part of any kind of political process", school district spokesman Jeff Nash told the site.

For example, a woman who thinks sex work should be illegal should take the time to understand that some women choose that line of work, and would like to keep their job while remaining safe.
