Polish president congratulates Tusk in letter

Donald Tusk has done a good job.

Faced with United States President Donald Trump's "America first" economic policy and a resurgent anti-globalisation tilt in their own backyards, the European Union chiefs used their last full meeting before Dutch and French elections to express their commitment to free trade and open commerce, pointing specifically to deals with Asian nations.

The president of the European Council is responsible for guiding the work of EU leaders, including preparing EU summits and chairing such meetings.

The Polish government failed to hold together an alliance of countries able to block the stricter rules, leaving Environment Minister Jan Szyszko demanding an explanation of the voting system and fuming when the tally was announced.

French President Fran├žois Hollande meanwhile said as he arrived for the summit that "for reasons of continuity, coherence and stability Tusk should be the candidate to remain president".

The Polish Government insisted that Tusk had violated his mandate by interfering in domestic politics.

Poland's intervention may even have galvanized support for Tusk at a time when the other top positions in the EU, the presidency of the Commission and the European Parliament, are also in the hands of his center-right European People's Party.

She added the European Council served a narrow set of countries, in a thinly veiled reference to Germany.

Poland's nationalist government, which has often been at odds with Brussels and EU partners, has proposed little-known Polish EU lawmaker Jacek Saryusz-Wolski to replace Tusk. "I will do my best to make European Union better", Tusk said in a tweet.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday evening, Tusk had philosophical words for all the European Union countries, especially his own. But Muscat indicated that he remains convinced the decision will be made Thursday.

Earlier this week Beata Szydlo, Poland's prime minister, circulated an extraordinary letter to her fellow heads of government more or less accusing Mr Tusk of high treason.

The election of Tusk was one of the first items on Thursday's summit agenda.

On Thursday, Tusk was reelected as the president of the European Council despite Poland's determination to postpone the vote.

The conclusions - on which Polish diplomats have worked as well - most probably would be turned into a statement, or a declaration signed by Tusk on behalf of 27 member states, except Poland. "The EU is an organization dominated by one country".

"There is no need for hurry, no need to make the decision today", Waszczykowski said on TVN24.
