Erdogan: Netherlands Acting like a 'banana republic'

Mar 14, 2017, 00:32

Rotterdam's mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said in a statement the Turkish consul-general in Rotterdam had "scandalously misled" Dutch authorities about the night's events and Kaya's visit to the city. A Turkish protester had scaled the wall, replaced the Dutch colours, and shouted that God was great.

Bayrakli told CNN: "I think it is a quite a serious diplomatic scandal because Turkey and Holland are allies in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the EU".

Erdogan called the Dutch "Nazi remnants" in response. Where are you European Union?

"These acts will not go unanswered. Those who let dogs loose on my citizens will pay", he said. The notes centered around the treatment of Turkish diplomats and the Rotterdam incident. He is angry that Turks living in the Netherlands have had their right to assemble compromised, but that is something he has done on a massive scale in his own country to his own people, arresting tens of thousands in the wake of a failed coup a year ago.

Cavusoglu spoke after the mayor of Rotterdam told reporters that the Turkish foreign minister will not be allowed to campaign for votes among expat Turks during a visit to Rotterdam on March 11.

Speaking during a head-to-head debate broadcast live on Dutch TV, Mr Wilders branded his opponent the "prime minister of foreigners".

Kenneth Kristensen Berth, EU spokesperson for DF, told newspaper Politiken that he was highly critical of Turkey's policy of campaigning in other European countries.

Earlier today Mr Rutte admitted Mr Wilders has a "real" chance of winning the upcoming election. Separately, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Turkey had "destroyed the basis for further progress in co-operation".

Erdogan is now trying to secure electoral support from the estimated 4.6 million Turkish expatriates living in western Europe before a referendum next month which would grant him sweeping new constitutional powers.

The 18-article bill was passed by parliament in January, with 339 votes in favor - nine more than needed to put the proposal to a referendum.

But questions are also being asked about the legality and appropriateness of campaigning for a specific political party while travelling overseas as representatives of the Republic of Turkey.

MPs from two Danish parties have said that they oppose election campaigning in Denmark by the Turkish government. "This is the same everywhere".

The diplomatic fight comes at a tough time in the Netherlands, which has national election on Wednesday, and where issues of Dutch identity and relations with migrant communities and Islam have taken center stage.

The planned rallies by the Turkish ministers in countries with native population come ahead of the April 16 referendum in Turkey that would expand the powers of the President. A threat of sanctions from Turkey if Mr Cavusoglu were denied entry "made a reasonable solution impossible", he said. "We should work together", Pechtold said in an interview on Sunday. "We will answer them with these", he added. "We also want to hear the Europeans condemn these fascist-like actions of the Dutch".

The events of the past fortnight mark a new low in already strained ties.

Earlier this week, Erdogan angered German Chancellor Angela Merkel by making similar remarks about Nazism in her country. "Because they don't want a stable, strong and more freedom Turkey", he added.
