Far-right Le Pen praises Theresa May over 'honourable' acceptance of Brexit

The highly controversial National Front leader, who has been forced to deny her party is racist, said France and Britain should have "excellent relations" if she wins in the spring and becomes president.

"To whatever extent this vote is a signal on France, the high turnout and rally towards the mainstream center look bad for her (Le Pen)", said Anna Stupnytska, Global Economist at Fidelity International.

Le Pen also avoided the prospect of answering questions on the allegations that her party siphoned off money from Brussels to fund party expenses in France.

"Voters from the left, right and center will know to react with one concern - put Mrs. Le Pen on the side, reassure what France is, its principles but also reassure from an economic, financial, budgetary, European point of view".

French far right leader Marine Le Pen has told new ally Nigel Farage that Britain is "already reaping the benefits" of Brexit.

'I see no reason why there should be customs duties between our countries, ' she said.

In an interview with former UK Independence Party (Ukip) leader Nigel Farage on the LBC, she complained of being snubbed by May and questioned her judgement, recalling how May treated US President Donald Trump in a similar manner before he became the president of the United States. Clips of the meeting during Farage's hour-long nightly show showed the two rightwing leaders laughing and criticising the failure of the prime minister, Theresa May, to invite the FN leader to Downing Street. We are old allies and economically speaking as well, we have a great many exchanges to implement.

She told LBC Radio: 'I find it hard to understand the consistency of the ideas and convictions in this approach of hers because Mr Macron is of course, the key salesperson of globalisation'.

The nationalist has pledged to renegotiate France's membership of the European Union and threatened that the republic would quit the bloc if she failed to get a decent deal.

"So I do not understand this inconsistency, this contradiction between what Theresa May stands for - because she has made a decision to be the woman who will implement Brexit - and her meeting with Emmanuel Macron".

The first round of the French election takes place on April 23, after which the two candidates with the most votes, expected to be Le Pen and Macron, enter a run-off on May 7.
