USA to ban some airline passengers from carrying electronics after 'terror threat'

Mar 21, 2017, 00:44

Royal Jordanian said it was following "instructions from the concerned United States departments" and would ban "laptops, cameras, DVD players, and electronic games" from the flight cabins.

Passengers traveling to the USA from certain countries will no longer be allowed to bring carry their laptops, tablets and other portable electronic devices with them on their flights, according to new rules set to go into effect Tuesday.

Royal Jordanian said any of the above must be stored in checked baggage. The affected airlines have 96 hours to comply.

A US official told CNN the directive would be for a limited duration, applies to some Middle Eastern and African countries, and is meant to ensure extra security measures at specific airports.

The full list of 13 nations has not been released, but Jordan's Royal Jordanian and Saudi Arabia's Saudia airliners are included in the ban.

Questions are being raised about whether passengers on some USA flights might be facing new restrictions barring laptops and other electronics from being brought onboard in carry-on luggage. Another US administration official says this covers devices larger than a cellphone. Then, sometime this afternoon, Royal Jordanian deleted that tweet, further adding to the confusion.

Representatives for the Transportation Security Administration and the Trump administration have yet to confirm or deny the reports.

In an emailed statement, David Lapan, acting deputy assistant secretary in the office of public affairs at Homeland Security said, "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide an update as appropriate".

THis announcement is effective starting with March 21, 2017, and the instructions will be applied to the NewYork, Chicago, Detroit and Montreal flights, the last two destinations served by a combined flight.
