AG Jeff Sessions says 'sanctuary cities' not eligible for certain

- Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired a broadside at so-called "sanctuary cities" Monday, telling reporters local policies of noncooperation with immigration authorities are "dangerous" and will cost communities federal funding.

"Today I am urging all states and local jurisdictions to comply with all federal laws, including 8 U.S.C. Section 1373".

Providence received $2.7 million in Justice Department grants between 2013 and 2016, according to an Eyewitness News review of federal grants awarded to the city.

"We have simply got to end this policy", Sessions said.

The state's Republican governor, Larry Hogan, has said he would veto the bill.

"And as we continue a dialogue and a discussion, and we continue to ensure that monies that go to law enforcement only go to cities who are participating in an effective, collegial, cooperative way with the federal government, that that would also send a message".

Sessions may find his ability to influence local decision-making through the Justice Department's purse to be limited, because only a fraction of the Justice Department┬┤s grant dollars flow directly to the cities and counties that determine whether to cooperate with federal immigration agents. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has identified 118 such jurisdictions. Mayor Jorge Elorza has declared he considers Providence a sanctuary city, but he also maintains the city fully complies with federal law when it comes to immigration issues, including entering the fingerprints of anyone who is arrested into a database that is monitored by ICE.

He brought up the death of Kate Steinle, a woman who was allegedly shot and killed by an undocumented immigrant on a San Francisco pier last summer.

"And all it asks is that we make sure that any information that we collect, we share with other law enforcement, with federal law enforcement, immigration law enforcement when they need it, and we do".

The report also noted one case in Westchester County on February 1.

The Trump administration has taken a number of actions to enforce the nation's immigration laws and stem the flow of undocumented immigrants.

The city had released Sanchez from custody in another case even though immigration authorities had filed a request that he be kept in custody until they could pick him up for removal, Sessions said. Previously, Trump had warned that "sanctuary cites" could lose all federal funding, theLos Angeles Times reported in March, but on Monday, Sessions limited the repercussions to DOJ grants.
