Senators urge USA Hockey to end dispute with women's team

Canada's women are paid $1,500 per month, 12 months per year, while the US women say they are paid only $1,000 a month for the six months before an Olympic Winter Games and nothing the rest of the time.

"These elite athletes indeed deserve fairness and respect, and we hope you will be a leader on this issue as women continue to push for equality in athletics", the senators wrote.

Brittany Ott, a goaltender for the Boston Pride of the National Women's Hockey League, and Annie Pankowski, a junior forward at the University of Wisconsin, said the email from USA Hockey was not an invitation but rather an inquiry about their availability.

On Sunday, Octagon agent Allan Walsh, whose clients include Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, tweeted that the USA men's national hockey team could also boycott the men's world championships in a show of solidarity.

Five-time Olympic medalist Hayley Wickenheiser says she hopes the US women's hockey team gets "all they are asking for" in negotiations with USA Hockey, as they prepare to boycott Friday's world championships in MI in a protest over compensation. Unlike the men's team, the U.S. Women's team has been a perennial gold medal favorite in worldwide play and widely viewed by hockey fans as a true hockey world power. The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, in 2016, filed a pay discrimination charge with the EEOC against U.S. Soccer, alleging they unfairly are paid less than the mean's team.
