Driver attacks police at Capitol Hill checkpoint, arrested

A person tried to ram a police cruiser on the U.S. Capitol grounds Wednesday morning and shots were fired during the incident, police said.

The female suspect was apprehended at 3rd and Independence Ave, and has been taken into custody. The police also fired shots in an attempt to stop the driver, but no one was hit, according to the report.

The incident began at 9:30 a.m., when a driver near the U.S. Botanic Garden struck a Capitol Police cruiser and proceeded to drive towards officers.

Police opened fire at Washington's Capitol Hill after a woman drove at officers.

The incident is being treated as a criminal matter and has no apparent connections to terrorism, Capitol Police said.

A policy that would cut health coverage in order to provide a tax cut to the wealthiest is not based in morality or common sense. Virtually all of those contacting the office opposed the measure, according Walz's spokesman Jesse Stock.

Streets near the Capitol were closed, and Capitol officials warned members of Congress and their staff to stay away from the area where the incident was happening.

According to Capitol Police, the woman, who has not yet been identified, was seen driving her vehicle erratically and attempted to make an illegal U-turn before ramming her auto into a police cruiser. "The vehicle was stopped at Washington and Independence Avenue, SW".

Metropolitan Police earlier said the suspect was a man. He then heard three gun shots before police swarmed the vehicle. "It was very much reassuring to see the quick response", he said. It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired.

Nearly exactly one year ago, U.S. Capitol Police shot a man after he pulled a weapon at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint as spring tourists thronged Washington.
