Ford recalls 440K vehicles for fire risk, door latch trouble

Ford is recalling more than 570,000 vehicles in North America and Europe to fix a mechanical issue that causes engine fires and doors to fly open unexpectedly, according to ABC News.

All of the affected vehicles (2014 Escape, 2014 to 2015 Fiesta ST, 2013 to 2014 Fusion, 2013 to 2015 Transit Connect) are fitted with the 1.6L GTDI engine.

The defect has been linked with at least 29 reports of fires in the US and Canada and no injuries, Ford said.

In addition, the company is also issuing recall notices in North American over a door latch issue on 2014 Fiestas, 2013-2014 Fusions and 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ's. If a vehicle has a coolant leak or overheats frequently, then customers should see their dealer right away.

Company officials are identifying a "lack of coolant circulation" as the culprit with those models. A door latch with a fractured pawl spring tab typically results in a "door will not close" condition.

This is the main reason why Nintendo has recently made a decision to double the production for their much appreciated console. The 3DS portable system, meanwhile, has sold over 65 million units since its launch in early 2012.

Ford's second recall expands on an earlier recall involving door latches. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents, Ford said it will notify dealers and owners, and replace all four door latches for free.

Ford is also recalling 548 2017 model year F-450 and F-550 trucks with faulty driveshafts. Above 75 miles per hour, the trucks' powertrain may resonate at a certain frequency that could stress the transmission or drivetrain to the point where parts may crack or otherwise become damaged. Thankfully, Ford hasn't received any reports of injuries related to this issue. Dealers will swap out the two-piece driveshaft with a new three-piece driveshaft and install two center bearing brackets. There have been no resulting accidents or injuries, Ford said.

Ford has also issued a recall for 111 2017 Ford Edge cars to fix windshield header welds.

Fracture of the transmission and/or driveline components may result in a loss of motive power without warning while driving, or unintended vehicle movement in park if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
