Joss Whedon in Talks to Write, Direct a 'Batgirl' Movie

Earlier today, we learned that Avengers helmer and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon is in talks with Warner Bros. and DC Films to direct a standalone Batgirl movie in their rapidly growing DC Extended Universe, and the world rejoiced.

Warner Bros. slate for the DC Extended Universe includes "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League", which have respective release dates of June 2 and November 17, and the Jason Momoa-led "Aquaman", due out in December 2018. That's right, Barbara Gordon, AKA Batgirl, is reportedly getting her own film which will be helmed by Joss Whedon.

Joss Whedon, after writing and directing two Avengers films, chose to part ways with the beloved Marvel franchise and ultimately step away from the Hollywood spotlight for a little while for a number of different reasons.

It's worth noting that recently, Jena Malone played Barbara Gordon in a series of sequences that were ultimately cut from last year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He of course became an A-list director after the wild success of 2012's The Avengers, yet he seemed to take more pleasure in his micro-budgeted William Shakespeare adaptation, Much Ado About Nothing, the following year than he did in the big budgeted superhero sequel that came afterward. Gordon has been known in the comics not only as Batgirl but also took on a support role as the Oracle after the Joker paralyzed her during the events of the Killing Joke. Plus, unfortunately there's something to be said in that a movie starring one of DC's most popular female heroes is, unlike Wonder Woman, potentially being helmed by a man. Whedon was, in many respects, the showrunner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

'Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows Of Valentia' Bundle Announced, Amiibo Functions Revealed
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is just one of several Fire Emblem games that Nintendo is releasing within the next year. The limited edition will retail for $59.99, while the standard version of the game is priced at $39.99.

A release date for the Batgirl movie has not been announced.

Football may be America's game, but in this trailer all this shot does is remind fans that this long-awaited superhero team-up movie is also saddled with the extra baggage of being the origin movie for Cyborg for some odd reason. This caliber of talent jumping from Disney's Marvel Studios to Warner Brothers' DC is unprecedented.

We've only seen a live action Batgirl on the big screen once and that was in the poorly received Batman and Robin film back in 1997.

According to, Joss Whedon's Batgirl movie will follow the Barbara Gordon version (which means we'll most likely also see J.K. Simmons in the film, as Simmons is playing Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU Justice League and Batman movies).
