'Let the tweet speak for itself': Spicer on Trump's Freedom Caucus attack

WASHINGTON ― As House Republicans try to revive their ill-fated health care bill, leaders are stepping back from the negotiations, allowing factions of the GOP conference to work out differences among themselves even as some groups are questioning whether they should be negotiating at all.

Until Trump turned his Twitter on them this week, most members of the Freedom Caucus were actually pretty close to the president. With over 170 members, it's much larger than the Freedom Caucus.

"Freedom Caucus stood with u when others ran", Labrador wrote.

Collins added that if the Freedom Caucus calls to negotiate, members of the Tuesday Group should "just hang up".

"When he came out against this bill, I thought, 'I trust him so this must be the right way, '" the 76-year-old retired teacher said of Massie this week as she sat at a coffee shop near her LaGrange home.

"W e appreciate the President, we're trying to help the President, but the fact is you've got to look at the legislation". But sources say, so far, they've come up with nothing that resembles a way forward.

But he had voted against it when it was being marked-up by the House Budget Committee.

"There's some trust that has to be rebuilt around here", Walker said, though he declined to get into specifics.

After President Trump threatened war against the House Freedom Caucus for 2018 in a Thursday morning tweet, members of the caucus were quick to respond.

"Let's forget the blame and what may happen in the future, let's just do what we said", Jordan told Fox News Channel's America's Newsroom on Thursday in response to Trump's threat.

Last week, press secretary Sean Spicer would not explicitly state whether the president would campaign against those who didn't support the health care bill. But leaders also don't seem to think they need to start over.

"This idea of not working with Democrats on health care is a big mistake", Republican Sen. It's just not clear whether tweaks can get conservatives there.

Trump identified the 30-plus members of the Freedom Caucus as political attack targets, together with the Democratic opposition, in the 2018 Congressional elections.

"The president can say what he wants and that's fine. Nearly everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment", Amash added.

What do conservatives think of his criticism of the Freedom Caucus?

Ryan said he was encouraging Republican lawmakers "to keep talking to one another". "I can tell you, everybody wants to get to yes. Everybody has a different threshold, though". "And for Amash to reject them is to not reflect what I know to be the desire of the constituents of this district".

Like others, he noted that that plan saved little money, didn't lower insurance premiums, and didn't fully repeal Obamacare as Trump and other Republicans promised. "And it doesn't do what we told the voters we were going to do, and the American people understand that".

He said he was optimistic that Republicans would reach a solution, but that Republicans would have to work with different factions and individual members to find a palatable agreement. "There are members who belong to no faction that also hated this bill".

The fissures appearing beneath Mr Trump's feet as he tries to lead the Republican Party are not new, of course.

Trump's missive is a reaction to last Friday's bitter legislative defeat, when his Republican majority in the House of Representatives was unable to muster the necessary votes to pass a health care bill that would have repealed and replaced Obamacare.
