Konta overpowers Wozniacki in Miami for first top level WTA title

Jo Konta touched heights unseen by a British woman in more than 30 years on Saturday night when she outplayed Caroline Wozniacki to win the Miami Open and achieve her biggest payday by far.

"I think I've always had the belief of wanting to become a Grand Slam champion, wanting to become the best in the world", Konta said.

Konta got off to a quick start in the opening set, breaking at love in the first game, before the two-time US Open finalist hit back to level the opening set.

Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki has made a decision to rent out her luxury condo in the Bayside Village section of Fisher Island, Florida.

Konta ran into the crowd to celebrate with her Belgian coach and the rest of her team after emerging the 6-4, 6-3 victor in the Florida sunshine.

"We're having a great time working hard and I'm looking forward to continuing to do so".

Konta began her quest for a first WTA Premier Mandatory title of her career with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 second round victory over Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich before the Brit put in a solid third round performance against Pauline Parmentier to reach the round of 16.

"I think there was so little in (this match) to go either way, so I'm just very pleased that I was able to really capitalise on a few more opportunities than her", said Konta.

Konta praised her team after the victory.

"I'm definitely positive", she said.

Wozniacki, in 2017 has already played two finals, lost in Doha and Dubai, against Karolina Pliskova and Elina Svitolina. I can't be too disappointed but obviously I am disappointed to lose two semi-finals especially when I think I could have won both matches. Wozniacki used all of her vaunted endurance to run tirelessly after every ball, but was undone by a weak serve.

She held her serve but was broken back in her second service game. She can play the same tournaments as me. We can not honestly say she looked to have enjoyed this one much better either, at the time but you have to feel for Wozniacki.

Serena Williams may not have been playing, but that hardly dilutes the achievement of winning probably the biggest event by a British woman since Virginia Wade took Wimbledon forty years ago.
