Apr 03, 2017, 02:21
Olympic silver-medallist PV Sindhu beat second seed Sung Ji Hyun 21-18 14-21 21-14 to enter the Indian Open Super Series final. The final was billed as a sort of a revenge fixture for Sindhu as it was Marin who beat her in the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to deny Sindhu an unprecedented gold.
The result marked the first time the 23-year-old Dane had lifted the BWF India Super Series title. It put added pressure on the tall Indian shuttler.
This was the second meeting between Sindhu and Marin after the Rio Olympics in August previous year where the Spaniard defeated the fifth-ranked Indian 21-19, 12-21, 15-21 in a thrilling contest to win the Gold medal.
At the 19-point mark, Sindhu equalised and then Saina played another successful bodyline stroke to be one point away from taking the tie to the third game.
But Marin edged her out for the top spot in that classic contest.
In the decider, Sindhu took an early lead but still had to dig deep into her reserves to halt Sung.
Sindhu upped the ante in the second game with a strong and solid court game, to race to a 4-0 lead. In the first game, the manner in which Sindhu approached her play at the net was a feature that stood out. She might know my game and I might know hers, we both will have this feeling that we won against each other.
'I was prepared for a long match because it's always been like that between us. She locked the game at 21-16 to win the $325,000 tournament. The final will be a cracker, I bet. "It did not turn out to be a good match for me but I am happy that I have reached the finals", Marin said after the match. I have won big tournaments early in the season.
