Pence breaks Senate tie on Planned Parenthood funding bill

Republicans have said the Obama rule should be overturned to allow states the right to steer funds away from abortion providers, if they choose.

As Republicans waited for Isakson to arrive, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's office sent a note to reporters with the subject line: "What's going on with this Senate vote?".

The rule prohibits states from withholding family-planning funding from providers for reasons other than their ability to offer family-planning services.

"A day after the White House hosted a "women's empowerment" summit, [VP Pence] cast the deciding vote to undermine access to birth control", Planned Parenthood said in a tweet.

"We're talking about federal family planning funds and I don't think that those funds should be subjected to state restrictions", Collins told Politico.

Pence cast the 51st vote to undo the regulation after two Republicans, Alaska Sen.

"This vote is consistent with the Senator's long-held belief that men and women should have access to the family planning and reproductive health services they need, including cancer tests and health screenings". Pence, the Senate's president, then emerged to break the 50-50 tie. "Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider and they don't deserve taxpayer money in my opinion and lots of other people's opinions".

What's next for Planned Parenthood? The GOP-dominated House of Representatives voted in favor of undoing the non-discrimination rule on February 16.

Republicans now hold a 52-48 majority in the Senate, however, Sen. From Vice President Mike Pence's odd abhorrence towards dining alone with women, President Donald Trump's many golf trips, and Ivanka Trump being given an official White House position, keeping up with the Trump administration hasn't been as easy task lately.

"We just want to make sure our $25,000 or more women get to continue to have the Planned Parenthood services in the state of Maryland", said Senator Nancy King (D-Montgomery County).

The final vote to pass the measure through the Senate could happen as early as Thursday afternoon.

The measure, which is a priority for groups that oppose abortion, would give a thumbs-up to Tennessee and other conservative states to resume policies blocking Planned Parenthood clinics from getting federal funding through the Title X family planning program.

She said Collins and Murkowski, who voted against the rule are, "missing out on the opportunity to stand up for comprehensive women's health care". It's possible it could end up just like the proposed health care bill. In 2011, IN slashed funding for Planned Parenthood, shutting down many rural clinics.
