Netflix is looking for a thumbs-up as star ratings fade away

The Court of Appeals ruled 5-1 that while the case "undoubtedly implicates novel and important substantive issues regarding the constitutional rights of privacy and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure", its authority was limited. Microsoft, Google and Twitter, as well as internet privacy advocates such as the New York Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, supported Facebook's appeal.

The case dates back to 2013 when search warrants for information on 381 Facebook accounts were issued as part of an investigation into the fraud case.

The court declined to discuss whether the warrants were constitutionally valid, saying it's up to state legislators to change the law.

Facebook has lost a legal fight against the Manhattan district attorney who sought search warrants for hundreds of user accounts. Facebook had tried to argue that the warrants were too broad, and that they overstepped the mark by demanding it not tell users the warrants existed.

"We're disappointed by the court's ruling".

"Even if those users could realistically seek relief for their own injuries through pretrial suppression hearings, Facebook will not be a party to those actions and the hypothetical resolution of their claims would not address or remedy Facebook's injuries", Wilson wrote. The Appellate Division order was on Tuesday upheld by the Court of Appeals. "We are grateful to the many organizations that joined us in challenging these overbroad warrants, and we are continuing to evaluate our options because we believe strongly in the issues underlying this case". The court found that only users themselves have the right to challenge warrants in criminal proceedings.
