Syria Chemical Attack Is 'Terrible Affront to Humanity'

Apr 06, 2017, 02:38

Trump said the attack led him to change his thoughts about Assad's regime.

And he renewed his criticism of his predecessor Barack Obama who in 2013 famously failed to take action after Assad crossed a "red line" with a previous chemical attack.

"I wouldn't be surprised after all of this is said and done that some people end up in jail", said Castro.

He also called on the worldwide community to take immediate action.

Pro-opposition Orient News television said the attack on Tuesday killed 50 people and injured more than 150.

France's foreign minister said the chemical attack showed Assad was testing whether the new USA administration would stand by Obama-era demands that he be removed from power.

Two U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, rejected Russia's account: "That strains credulity", said one.

Assad will be watching to see if that's the extent of Trump's response, experts say.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson planned to discuss the attack and the Syria crisis next week when he makes his first official trip to Moscow, the State Department said.

There are mixed messages, however, coming out of the administration. He also said that he would "protect civilization". That didn't happen. Instead, Syria upped the ante.

Representatives from the U.S., United Kingdom, and France have ‎circulated a draft resolution demanding that the Syrian government provide flight logs from Tuesday, the day of the attack, which killed dozens, including many children. Shifting the balance of power in Syria would require US -led intervention. But key questions will still remain - including where the weapons came from, and how the world will respond. As president, he defended Putin last month in an interview with Fox's Bill O'Reilly.

For now, Haley's comments are the most direct threat of unilateral action by the U.S. about acting on the Syria crisis - but they mark a departure from the Trump administration's more hands-off stance on Syria and may be more rhetoric than reality. Throughout the presidential election campaign, Trump was saying the same thing. "If Russia has the influence in Syria that it claims to have, we need to see them use it". "I will tell you that". "Once you've been exposed to these things it's very very hard to do anything about it".

"Certain states in this Council are already manipulating the preliminary results of the Joint Investigative Mechanism", he said, referring to the UN-sponsored fact-finding mission.

According to United Nations relief coordinator Stephen O'Brien "for the immediate needs of 2017, we need about $8 billion", but he said that aid can not reach those in need without a cease-fire.

There are a lot of unusual bedfellows when it comes to fighting ISIS.

"The allegation is that somehow Obama administration officials utilized intelligence for political purposes". John McCain and Florida Sen.

"The truth is that Assad, Russia, and Iran have no interest in peace", she said. "I'm sure they are encouraged to know the United States is withdrawing and seeking a new arrangement with the Russians".

It held rebels responsible, saying they attacked their own territory in order to distract from their losses across the country.

McCain, though, is an interventionist.

Indeed, during a late March visit to Turkey, Tillerson said that Assad's fate "will be decided by the Syrian people", language that Syria, Iran and Russian Federation have used to convey their intention that the Syrian leader isn't going anywhere. What would that mean, and would the American people really be on board with that? In a rare reversal of roles, Trump was more reserved than many of his top advisers - including his United Nations envoy, who revived the hard-hitting rhetoric of Trump's political campaign and strongly hinted some US action was coming.

Trump went on to praise Jordan's efforts in the fight against ISIS.

But the strategy - if there is one - is less than clear.

"The only solution to Syria is to summon Chemical Assad to the tribunal and not invite him to the negotiating table", he tweeted on Wednesday.

Tone and rhetoric aside, that actually sounds remarkably similar to what Obama was doing.

"It is now my responsibility", Trump continued.
