One For Arthur wins Grand National for the 'Two Golf Widows'

Apr 11, 2017, 06:38

The Scottish-trained victor One for Arthur was the unexpected victor - only the second win by a Scottish-trained horse, the last being in 1979.

But he came as close as he ever will to taking the honours yesterday as the assistant trainer of One For Arthur, who brought Scotland its first National victor since Rubstic in 1979 and made Lucinda Russell, Scudamore's partner, the fourth woman to train a National victor.

One For Arthur, trained by Lucinda Russell, sprinted down the home stretch to take the title by four-and-a-half lengths.

United Kingdom bookmakers were hoping for a strong Grand National, to follow up on a highly successful Cheltenham Festival this March, deemed to be "the best Cheltenham ever" by numerous industry stakeholders.

"Derek is really good at holding them up but sometimes he's criticised for being too far back but he wasn't today". Back then, One For Arthur was not even his ride.

"The doctor said the only way I would be able to race is with a splint on", Fox said.

Owners Belinda McClung and Deborah Thomson chose to call their syndicate "Two Golf Widows" after they bought the horse while their partners were out playing golf.

"I was injured in March, I got a heavy fall on the novice chase, that was four weeks ago on Thursday".

Ridden by Derek Fox, the Lucinda Russell-trained runner galloped on resolutely to keep Cause Of Causes at bay and clinch the world's greatest steeplechase, emulating Rubstic in 1979.

The victory partially makes up for years of failure in the race for Scudamore, who never finished better than third in 12 attempts at the National despite being his country's top jockey in the 1980s and early '90s. "I can't quite believe it".

A 9th placed finish for Pleasant Company and Ruby Walsh meant that he couldn't claim another win on his 13th attempt at the National, but he did produce a moment that left the analysts singing his praises after the race.

The 8-1 favourite Blaklion, who led for much of the contest, was fourth. Arthur and jockey Derek Fox never really put a foot wrong. "I don't often get a chance to ride a horse as good as that".

He's only 24. He didn't get flustered - he's got a great attitude.
