Amnesty says Botswana executed 1 criminal in 2016

Switzerland is pursuing an ambitious goal to abolish capital punishment around the world by 2025. The US, meanwhile, saw the lowest number of executions since 1991. The United States was seventh with just 20.

The last civilian execution in Switzerland took place in 1940. They wanted to use their supplies before they expire. Death penalty was imposed or implemented for drug-related offences in a number of countries.

At least 18,848 people were on death row at the end of 2016.

Excluding China, states around the world executed 1,032 people in 2016.

In this Monday, April 10, 2017 photo, the copies of reports on the death penalty are displayed during a press conference of Amnesty International in Hong Kong.

Most executions in Iran during 2016 were by hanging. Only 85 of them could be found in the official database. There are official statistics, but they are believed to be heavily sugarcoated. "It certainly isn't", said Alexander Bojcevic, a spokesman for the human rights organization. But there are still a high number of unreported cases.

Amnesty says hundreds of documented death penalty cases are missing from a national online court database in China that was initially presented as a sign of greater openness.

China is not the only country which keeps its deadly administering of justice under wraps.

The group estimated that several thousand people were put to death previous year, without detailing how it arrived at that estimate. There were no concrete figures for Vietnam in 2016 either.

"The debate is clearly shifting", he said in the group's annual global review of the death penalty, which showed a 37 percent decline overall.

Lack of transparency in relation to enforcement of terrorism and drug laws in China is identified as a growing area for concern by Amnesty International in a report published today.

"We fear that trade and security issues are trumping human rights, with United Kingdom officials damping down their objections to the death penalty when it comes to countries like Saudi Arabia or Bahrain". Together these five countries accounted for 90 per cent of all executions worldwide. The region recorded a total of 110, the overwhelming majority of which - 101 - were in Zambia.

New disclosures in Vietnam and Malaysia also found that the numbers of executions in those countries were higher than previously thought.

A significant decrease in the implementation of death sentences was also recorded in Pakistan, by 73 percent. It applauded two countries that completely abolished the practice in 2016: Benin and Nauru. The state's "double execution" approach is a controversial one.

Again, Sangiorgio said, Amnesty is concerned about the contravention of global law and standards in Pakistan's death penalty trials for crimes such as "blasphemy", "insulting the prophet of Islam", and so-called "crimes against the state" - none of which met the threshold of "most serious crimes" under worldwide law. Last December a court overturned his conviction, but that verdict came 21 years too late for him. In theory, it enables the inmate to die as peacefully as possible. After receiving an injection of firstly, Midazolam, and secondly, a lethal poison, Lockett took 43 minutes to die a painful death. "Most of the time, we dealt mainly with murder cases", she added.

"If we look at the top five around the world, we know that China is the standout one, so this is the one that executes by the thousands", Amnesty International's Rose Kulak told the ABC's PM program.
