Emerging nations urge rich countries to honour climate finance pledges - statement

A source close to the meeting confirmed U.S. secretary of energy Rick Perry had informed his counterparts that the U.S. was "reviewing" its climate and energy policies and therefore could not sign a joint declaration that referred to the treaty signed in Paris in 2015.

"Innovation is also a top priority for the Trump Administration", Perry added.

"The Secretary of Energy of the United States of America informed fellow Ministers and Commissioner that the United States is in the process of reviewing many of its policies and reserves its position on this issue, which will be communicated at a future date", he added.

The energy czars of the G7 group of nations failed to reach agreement on a strategy to combat global warming, as the United States' new leadership pedals doubts on the veracity of climate science that connects human activity to rising temperatures.

BASIC countries comprising Brazil, South Africa, India and China said today that efforts against climate change were irreversible and called for implementation of the Paris deal, days after US President Donald Trump ordered a roll back of his predecessor's climate policies.

The moves threaten to upend the 2015 Paris agreement on climate change backed by more than 190 nations including the US and China.

Trump has made no secret of both his scepticism about climate change and his desire to revive the USA coal industry.

Xie told reporters that China could now surpass its 2020 climate change commitments, which included a pledge to reduce 2005 levels of carbon intensity - the amount produced per unit of economic growth - by 40 percent to 45 percent.

The Financial Times reported that the G7 meeting also saw disagreement over a United States attempt to insert references in the joint statement to fossil fuels. The meeting was also attended by European Commissioner of Action for Climate and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete; The German Federal Secretary of Economy and Energy, Rainer Baake; The French Minister of Ecology, Ségolene Royal; And the British Minister of State for Climate Change and Industry, Nicholas Hurd, among others.

However, Calenda's summary of the meeting also revealed some significant areas of agreement across the G7.

Perry specifically pushed for a commitment to "h$3 igh efficiency, low-emission coal and natural gas with adequate financing from multi-lateral development banks and private sector investment". As part of the talks that have spanned more than two decades, industrial nations have pledged to help their less developed counterparts to fund measures that will move the world away from fossil fuels.

United Kingdom climate and industry minister Nick Hurd tweeted that he had been pleased to meet Perry and there was "lots of common ground on energy security and innovation".
