US, Canada, Mexico launch joint bid to host 2026 world cup
Apr 12, 2017, 01:29
The news of the joint World Cup bid was met with some resistance in Mexico, nearly entirely because the country - host of the 1970 and 1986 World Cups - was expected to be handed more games.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first with the expanded 48-team format, requiring facilities and infrastructure that Gulati believes the three countries are uniquely suited to fulfill.
Canada, the United States and Mexico have launched their bid to co-host the 2026 World Cup. The US also hosted women's World Cups in 2003 and 1999, while Mexico has hosted men's World Cups in 1986 and 1970, and Canada had the women's World Cup in 2015. Following this, an enhanced phase for bid preparation will take place from this June until December 2018. This will be three years later than scheduled because of corruption allegations surrounding the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russian Federation and Qatar.
The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is the official organization behind the bid, that if successful, would host 48 nations for 80 World Cup matches in 2026 - 60 in the United States, 10 in Canada and 10 in Mexico. Japan and South Korea did co-host the 2002 World Cup but Federation Internationale de Football Association has steered away from joint bids since then. The United States wants to join together with Mexico and Canada and then invite the world's best soccer nations and their fans to the continent.
Russian Federation will host the 2018 World Cup and Qatar in 2022. And, if successful, it would be just the second World Cup held in multiple countries (2002 in Korea and Japan was the first).
Some reports have suggested that Morocco, which failed in bids for four previous World Cups, could team up with Spain and possibly Portugal in a joint bid.

However what must also be kept in mind is that having two or three host nations might required twice or thrice as much effort in terms of organizing, which may also lead to rise in costs. According to Gulati, the U.S. will host 60 games.
Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from NY, said: "While the decision isn't expected for another three years, this joint bid is a clear front runner also because there appears to be no challengers".
"The United States, Mexico and Canada have individually demonstrated their exceptional abilities to host world-class events", added Gulati.
"We have the full support of this project from the USA government", Gulati said.
It looks like the USA and CONCACAF know it. When will we know if the CONCACAF region will get the World Cup? All of the games from the quarter-finals onwards would be held in the US. South America last hosted the World Cup in 2014 (Brazil).
