Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied allegations that he was responsible for the deadly chemical attack that took place in Khan Sheikhoun last week, calling the claims a "fabrication".

"We don't know if the whole pictures or video that we've been seeing are true, or fabricated", the Syrian president insisted. "In his Wednesday interview with AFP, Assad similarly said his nation would allow only an "impartial" investigation".

The chemical attacks in Syria that left more than 80 men, women and children dead have been blamed on Assad. USA administration officials have said evidence clearly shows Assad's forces were behind the attack and that sarin gas was used. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed there were many problems, but stressed that Moscow was "open to dialogue with the USA in all different areas".
