Assad says chemical attack in Syria was '100% fabricated'

Apr 16, 2017, 02:07

By a wide margin (58% to 36%), Americans approve of the US missile strikes against Syria in response to reports of the use of chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad's government.

Asked if he had ordered the chemical weapons attack, Assad said the Syrian military had no chemical weapons and that it would not use them if it did. "They fabricated the whole story in order to have a pretext for the attack".

Furthermore, the USA response to the strike was an attempt to send a message to the world that the use of chemical weapons will not be allowed to become an
international norm.

The interview on Wednesday was his first since a suspected chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians in the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun. There are a lot of fake videos now.

A Ministry of Defense spokesperson told CNN on Thursday that the scientists had conducted the tests in British labs on blood and hair samples from victims, collected at Khan Sheikhun in Syria's idlib province, where 89 people were killed in the April 4 gas attack.

"If they are serious in fighting terrorists, we're going to be partners, and I said not only the United States", Assad said.

"Definitely, 100 percent for us, its fabrication", he said in the interview on Wednesday in reference to the alleged chemical weapons attack.

On April 6, the United States had launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha'irat in response to the alleged chemical weapon use in Idlib province. And Turkey, which received numerous wounded from the attack, said it has "concrete evidence" of the use of chemical weapons. Assad's refutation came a day after his own wife gave an interview in which she did not deny the veracity of the picture, saying: "These are all children, they are all innocent children, and they are all a loss to Syria irrespective of which side of the conflict we support".

The pair criticised Russian Federation for vetoing a UN Security Council resolution on Syria and accused Moscow and Tehran of covering up details of Mr Assad's chemical weapons use. The day after the Trump Administration launched the missile attack into Syria, stock prices jumped for Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Boeing and other major US defense contractors.

Lavrov met earlier this week with his U.S. counterpart, Rex Tillerson, in Moscow for talks that also focused on the Syrian conflict.

The Syrian government has sent an official invitation to the OPCW, asking its experts to take part in the investigation, while the opposition has promised to provide access to areas it controls, as well guarantee security for the experts, according to Russia's foreign minister.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday he and Tillerson had discussed the USA strike and agreed "such a situation should not be repeated".

It was the eighth time Russian Federation has used its veto to block action directed at Damascus.

Democrats are divided over the missile strikes - but a large majority says Trump lacks a clear plan for Syria.

"We will not allow the peace process to be disrupted", he added.
