New England police arrest suspect in connection to murder of Vanessa Marcotte

Standing in front of the Princeton Police Department Saturday afternoon, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early opened a press conference with these three short words, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd that had gathered to hear the latest news on the murder of 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte. He also said Ortiz worked in the area and "had been for some time".

She never returned, and her body was found that night in a wooded area about a half mile from her mother's house.

The suspect's DNA is a 1:108 quintillion match to that found on Marcotte's hands when she fought her killer last summer.

Colon-Ortiz was charged Friday with aggravated assault, aggravated assault and battery and assault with intent to rape.

Marcotte, a 27-year-old Boston University graduate who was living in NY and working for Google, was visiting her mother in Princeton last summer the weekend she was murdered.

Unable to find a piece of paper, Early said the trooper wrote down the vehicle's license plate number on his hand. State Police troopers had spoken with Colon-Ortiz earlier in the investigation after observing him in a truck that matched descriptions of a vehicle seen near the crime scene.
