Stampede breaks out at New York City train station

What began as long delays at Pennsylvania Station in NY turned into a nightmare on Friday after a false report of shots fired caused a stampede.

Six people from the disabled train were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the FDNY said.

People ran out of a jam-packed Penn Station on Friday evening in a chaotic scene sparked by what they thought was a gunshot.

Transport police said that two people were taken into custody for disobeying orders, according to ABC.

About 1,200 New Jersey Transit passengers have made it safely to Penn Station after the train they were on got stuck in a tunnel for hours on Friday, a spokeswoman said.

With a 4 hour trapped train packed with about 1200 passengers, a mini-stampede upon arrival in Penn Station due to police activity and panic, yesterday's events will be the subject of investigation.

Following the latest episode, the Federal Railroad Administration and Amtrak are set to review infrastructure and protocols at Penn Station.

Some people were crying or screaming as they left the station. "Just having people running to an exit ...can cause a problem".

"Given our experience, dealing with similar situations, we were able to quickly review all of the 911 calls and determine that there were no actual shots fired", he said. "Everybody was really scared".

No shots were fired, and the sound was of police using a stun gun on someone, NYPD Chief William Morris said.

At Macy's Herald Square - down the block from Penn Station - multiple people were tweeting about reports of an active shooter there around the same time Friday.
