Microsoft Will Eventually Replace Wunderlist with New To-Do App

Microsoft yesterday announced a new feature for users of the Microsoft Authenticator app that allows the sign-in process on Microsoft accounts to be done using a phone instead.

The feature works with the Microsoft Authenticator app for Android and iOS (no Windows phone version yet), and it's pretty easy to set up.

In some cases the app will produce an eight-digit password for the authentication.

"The new functionality in the Authenticator app to use biometrics (in the form of fingerprints from Apple's Touch ID), one time codes, and even approvals for a notification from the app (on unlocked phones only, naturally) is a significant improvement over password-only authentication", Axon told Threatpost Wednesday.

"With phone sign-in, we're shifting the security burden from your memory to your device", Alex Simons, director of program management for Microsoft's Identity Division, explained in a blog post.

According to Alex Simons, director of program management at Microsoft's Identify Division, Authenticator has been created to get rid of the fiddly pain of trying to remember and enter passwords every time a user wants to login to their Microsoft account.

According to Microsoft's announcement, To-Do starts you off in a screen called "My Day" which offers a list of items that need to get done today. The company stated, "Windows Phone makes up 5% of the active users of our Authenticator Apps so we have prioritized getting this working with iOS and Android for now". Once they have added the account, whenever they sign in somewhere new, they will receive a notification on their phone. If a user does not have their mobile device nearby, a link at the bottom of the confirmation page will let them choose to use a password instead. The two-step authentication involves users entering their username for a Microsoft account and thereafter, receiving a sign-in alert on their devices that they can either approve or deny. It's part of the Microsoft Authenticator app, and it just might work.

Microsoft promises to bring Wunderlist's most-loved features to To-Do in the long run.
