How the Borussia bomber hoped to make millions

No one was killed, but the bombs injured a policeman and one of Dortmund's players, 26-year-old Spanish global Marc Bartra.

Federal prosecutors said the suspect, who also was staying in the same hotel as the team, had bought 15,000 put options for a total of 78,000 euros ($80,000) on the Internet for shares in Borussia Dortmund, the only top club in Germany that is publicly listed.

A 28-year-old German-Russian citizen has been charged with attempted murder, causing an explosion and aggravated battery and severe bodily harm. A police officer accompanying the bus also suffered trauma.

The suspect, identified only as Sergej line with German privacy laws, was arrested by a police tactical team early Friday near the southwestern city of Tuebingen, federal prosecutors said. Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel criticized UEFA and top soccer officials for forcing the team to play such a top-level match so quickly after an attack on their team.

"If the shares of Borussia Dortmund had fallen massively, the profit would have been several times the initial investment", a statement said, before adding that such a slump would have occurred if players had been seriously injured or even killed.

The suspect was staying in the same Dortmund hotel as the team, had a view of the scene where the bombs went off and had bought so-called put options on the team's shares on the day of the incident, prosecutors said. The blast, which was originally treated as a terrorist attack believed to be carried out by Islamic extremists, now appears to be an elaborate scheme by a stock trader in an attempt to make money by destroying the team's stock price.

Samples from Syrian attack test positive for sarin, United Kingdom scientists say
USA administration officials have said evidence clearly shows Assad's forces were behind the attack and that sarin gas was used. A suspected April 4 chemical attack in civil war-ravaged Syria killed almost 90 people and is under OPCW investigation.

In a press statement on Friday, Germany's criminal prosecutor said the faulty installation of the explosive devices may have saved the players' lives. Dortmund, whose players were clearly rattled by the attack, ended up getting knocked out of the tournament after being upset in the two-leg competition by Monaco, losing, 3-2, at home and then losing away, 3-1, for an aggregate score of 6-3.

The man later placed three bombs in a hedge on the road that the team bus was due to take to the stadium, according to prosecutors.

Three purported claims of responsibility stating a radical Islamist motive were found at the scene, on paper bearing no fingerprints, prosecutors said.

The fact that, aside from Bartra and the policeman, "no others were wounded or even killed, was - as we know today - exclusively due to huge luck", BVB said in its statement Friday. "The fact that no further people were injured or killed was, as we now know, purely a matter of luck", it said on Facebook.

Team captain Marcel Schmelzer said the side hoped "we will learn the actual background of the attack" which would help "all those who sat on the bus. come to terms with" the traumatic event.

German newspaper Tagesspiegel said on its website last week it had received an anonymous far-right email claiming responsibility for Tuesday's attack.
