Unemployment rates fall to record lows in 4 US states

At 4.9 percent, the IL jobless rate stands at its lowest level since June 2007, after having decreased for two consecutive months.

Weld County's unemployment rate just keeps getting lower. Jobs requiring specialized skills are struggling even more, experts said.

In the Topeka area, the jobless rate fell to 3.6 percent, down from 4.1 percent in February and 4.3 percent a year ago. Clay had the lowest rate at 3.9 percent, followed by Duval (4.3), Flagler (4.8) and Putnam (5.4).

The commonwealth's March 2017 unemployment rate also is seven-tenths of a percentage point lower than the national rate for that month, 4.5 percent. Six counties experienced rates above 6 percent: Clearwater, at 9 percent; Adams, at 7.1 percent; Shoshone and Lewis, at 7 percent each; Benewah, at 6.9 percent; and Lemhi, at 6 percent. The biggest private-sector job gains were in the retail industry, while the manufacturing sector lost about 600 jobs. "Hiring at retailers and restaurants was also adversely impacted by this year's relatively late Easter".

"The job market was excellent in the Jacksonville area in March", said Albert Loh, professor of economics and chairman of the Department of Economics and Geography at the University of North Florida Coggin College of Business.

A Friday report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics says it dropped to 4.5 percent in March from 4.7 in February.

The household survey and business survey can send conflicting messages from month to month, but they tend to balance out over a year's worth of data. "This persistent lag in job growth explains why it took 10 years to push the unemployment rate below 5 percent". Within the Leisure & Hospitality grouping, the job increases were evenly split between Accommodation and Food Services & Drinking Places.

More significantly, California continued to lead the nation in job growth, with its 19,300 new jobs accounting for almost 20 percent of the 98,000 created in the United States. The 75,689 people looking for work in Colorado during March were the fewest since April 2001 and was down almost 11,000 from the February total.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, Kansas gained 1,400 nonfarm jobs during the month, but only about 500 of those were in the private sector.
