National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day set for April 29

Safe disposal of unused and expired medications is the goal of Saturday's National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and local dropoff points are available.

During last year's collection, Californians disposed of 32 tons of unwanted drugs, according to the state Department of Public Health.

Many abusers report getting their drugs from friends and family, including their home medicine cabinets.

In addition to national take back day, the South Dakota Board of Pharmacy is working to establish year-round take back locations in pharmacies across the state with an initial roll out expected in July.

The Abilene Police Department will once again be participating in National Drug Take-Back Day April 29. Since the program began in 2010, more than 50 tons of unwanted medications have been collected and destroyed in Kansas alone. Disposing of prescription drugs by throwing them in the trash or flushing them down the toilet may pose health risks, the release stated.

Drop-off boxes are also located at the Moore County Sheriff's Office, Aberdeen Police Department, Pinehurst Police Department and Whispering Pines Police Department. In 12 previous Take Back events, the DEA and its Northern California partners accepted almost 350,000 pounds of unused medication. Our Theodore substation is 24 hour drop off.
