Hacker threatens to release stolen copies of Netflix series

A hacker apparently has stolen the fifth season of Netflix's popular drama "Orange Is The New Black" and is now demanding a an undisclosed ransom or else the episodes will be released prematurely on the internet.

As mentioned above, this could also be a ploy to crash Netflix share values so The Dark Overlord can acquire some for far less than they are now. "A production vendor used by several major TV studios had its security compromised and the appropriate law enforcement authorities are involved", Netflix said in a statement provided to TheWrap. The hacker (or hacker collective) behind the heist has claimed to have made an extortion demand to the company, asking for an unspecified sum of money.

Orange Is The New Black is up to its 5th season. "We were quite offended by our targets' responses (or lack thereof)", it added.

According to "thedarkoverlord", the hacker or hackers also have obtained unreleased shows from ABC, Fox, National Geographic and IFC. The suspect has threatened to release those programs as well if "modest" ransoms are not paid, even though we don't know which other shows are included on the hostage list. "They fear that an early release of 'Orange is the New Black" could both their profits and their subscriber rates. On Saturday, the hackers tweeted a link to a downloadable torrent file that they described as "the remainder" of the season, as well as a dramatic press release.

It is believed that the content was stolen in an attack on the post-production studio Larson Studios in 2016 - which is why the last three episodes of the series were not published. It would seem their view on the matter has changed. The series is scheduled to premiered on June 9th, so Netflix officials has the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other police officials investigating the issue.
