Trump Helps Release American Aid Worker Jailed In Egypt

A US aid worker jailed in Egypt for three years returned home to Washington, her lawyer said, thanking the White House for help in her release.

Earlier this month President Donald Trump moved to reset USA relations with Egypt, hosting Sisi for talks at the White House and giving him firm backing, including in the fight against Islamist militants.

She was flown to Joint Base Andrews, the USA military airfield on the outskirts of Washington.

She was acquitted by a Cairo court on Sunday along with seven others who had worked with street children.

Trump, however, has set aside criticism of Sissi's human rights record while pledging to maintain support for the key United States ally which receives an annual $1.3 billion in military aid.

Her release was reportedly agreed before Mr Trump met Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi this month.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer confirmed Friday that Trump had discussed Hijazi's release with Sissi during the Egyptian leader's visit to the White House in early April.

Following the release of Aya Hijazi, who was imprisoned in Egypt for three years, and her subsequent visit to the White House today, President Donald Trump tweeted out a video celebrating her release.

The charity worker founded Belady [an Arabic word for "our nation"], a non-governmental organisation in 2013 with an aim to promote a better life for children on the streets.

The meeting "addressed aspects of military and security cooperation between the two countries and ways to further enhance them", Sisi's presidential office said in a statement.

Trump had dispatched a USA government aircraft to Cairo to bring Hijazi and her family to Washington for this meeting.

According to the Post, Hijaz and her husband landed in Washington on Thursday at 10 p.m. ET and she is scheduled to meet Friday with Trump, his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner.

Trump has vowed to work closely with Arab allies in the fight against the Daesh. She was arrested in 2014 after a man alleged that his son was missing and accused Hijazi's organisation for it.

Her release is seen as a success for The White House after the Obama administration tried but failed to have her set free.
