Former French PM Manuel Valls pledges allegiance to Emmanuel Macron's movement

"If some (people) want to leave and go apart, they can do so and let us work", he said.

A representative of Republic On the Move said Wednesday that Valls had "not yet" fulfilled the criteria to be a candidate.

Behind her decision though is a battle for the far-right party's future between the more socially progressive wing led by her aunt and the more Catholic, conservative branch based in the south of France represented by Marechal-Le Pen. Macron's election in a victory over the National Front's Marine Le Pen on Sunday has destroyed the dominance of the center-left and center-right parties which have ruled over French politics for almost 60 years.

Since Macron is viewed as a business-friendly leader, a loyal ally of the European Union and supporter of immigration and LGBTQ rights, the market is expected to surge in the coming days.

Mr Hamon, who gained popularity in recent years by leading a group of rebel Socialist lawmakers who opposed Mr Valls, was a distant fifth in the first round of the presidential election after garnering just over 6% of the votes, the Socialist Party's worst result since 1969.

The candidates will be announced by Thursday.

"The second act in the redrawing of our political life will be the building of a parliamentary majority in the elections in June", secretary general of the movement, Richard Ferrand, told reporters on Monday.

"The Prime Minister and President-elect Macron looked forward to meeting and holding discussions at the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and G7 Summits", the spokesperson added.

"It's time to turn that situation round", he said during a BFM TV interview.

Macron, a former investment banker and an economic liberal, won by 66.06 per cent to 33.94 per cent to become the countrys youngest President at the age of 39.

Macron was literally introduced into politics by Hollande, who chose him as his economy adviser during his 2012 winning campaign.

The Socialists, whose term in government comes to an end in tandem with the departure of President Francois Hollande, have traditionally disputed power with the centre-right for the past half century.

Hamon vowed to "rebuild the left" with a new "broad-based movement", while saying he meant to remain a member of the Socialist Party.

The incoming president has said half of the candidates for the 577 seats up for grabs in the two-round June 11-18 elections to the National Assembly will be new to politics.
