Korean Kim becomes youngest to win Players Championship

May 15, 2017, 09:31

Adam Scott has made an 11th-hour bid for a top-10 finish at the Players Championship with a back-nine charge during the final round at TPC Sawgrass. Now he has a platform upon which to build for the rest of the year having returned to the world's top 100.

Kim's first PGA Tour victory came at last season's Wyndham Championship in his 38th PGA Tour start. He doesn't have to worry about keeping his PGA Tour card next year. Less than a month ago, Poulter was fighting for his Tour card.

That allowed the former world number five to play at Sawgrass and the 41-year-old - who had slipped to 197th in the rankings - made the most of his reprieve.

Resolute and cool under pressure, Kim used a bogey-free final round to collect his biggest victory by finishing 72 holes on 10-under 278.

The Englishman took it from there.

South Korean Kim Si-woo produced a faultless round to become the youngest champion at the Players Championship.

"Two, three weeks ago to have been in a position where I wasn't playing The Players and was looking to write nice letters to Jack (Nicklaus) for Memorial (tournament) and all of those great tournaments that I'd like to play in, things change pretty quick with good golf, and that's what I've done this week".

"As good as [Kim] played [Saturday], he's obviously gone out there [Sunday] and played even better", Poulter said.

"I've looked at trying to play as many events as I can in a short period of time from now to lock up whatever it is I need to", he added. He made just one bogey (to eight birdies) over his final 36 holes and was never really in trouble down the stretch in the final round.

After 39 consecutive holes without dropping a shot, Poulter then finally bogeyed on the 12th. He hit an unbelievable chip to two feet. After pars at the next five holes, the youngster birdied two of the next three holes for a front-nine 3-under 33 to get himself to 10-under, the first to reach that number all week as the course played extremely hard in the final round.

Hundreds of officers from all over the state attended the ceremony at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy in London, Ohio. Police officers who died in the line of duty were remembered Wednesday by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Even so, Poulter's outlook sure is different. "I was nervous out there all day, being in a situation I hadn t been in for a while". "But being four behind with four holes to go is probably not ideal".

"I feel like I'm still dreaming", Kim said via a translator after the victory. "Once I realized I was 7 over through seven, I kind of went away", he said.

Cabrera Bello threw his 8-iron high in the air, and it went into the water, though at least it could be retrieved.

Kim sank a 24-foot birdie putt at the par-4 seventh to seize the lead and sank an 18-foot birdie putt at the par-5 ninth to reach 10-under for a two-stroke advantage.

He wound up with a 70 and tied for fourth.

If you picked Si Woo Kim, a 21-year-old from South Korea as your victor, take a bow.

The world's top 10 players - Scott barely missed the cut, entering the week at No. 11.

"It's a huge amount of weight lifted, I can't really explain and put it into words". This year, they will be September 28 to October 1 at Liberty National in New Jersey.

Holmes hit two balls in the water on 17, which started a quintuple-bogey, double-bogey finish. Holmes and Kyle Stanley.

The stunning achievement by 21-year-old Kim, though, saw him follow in the footsteps of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia and Jordan Spieth.
