Thousands of AT&T and DirecTV workers are going on strike this weekend
May 20, 2017, 00:29
AT&T Wireless workers - some 21,000 of them - have given management until Friday, May 19 at 3 p.m. ET to come to the table with "serious proposals that invest in good jobs with a future". The workers on strike are members of the CWA.
The union is also fighting the spread of "authorized retailers", which are run on a non-union franchise basis and maintain notoriously poor working conditions. Our demands are clear and have been for months: fair contract or strike.
AT&T spokesman Mark Giga issued a statement, saying it's "baffling" as to why union leadership would call a strike.
Wireline workers, who work in phone, landline and cable services businesses in California, Nevada, and CT, and DirecTV technicians across California and Nevada have also joined the strike. AT&Tsaid the stoppage is slated to end at midnight Sunday.
Giga added that the strike involves less than 14 percent of AT&T's employees.
This is a strike happening with over 40,000 AT&T employees across the country.
"AT&T doesn't want to bargain with us, so we're taking a stand". CWA leaders said that while AT&T brings in almost $1 billion in monthly profits, the company continues to outsource and offshore jobs. The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO fully supports the actions of CWA members demanding fair wages, affordable benefits and job security.
Workers have been mobilizing all week, with informational picketing outside call centers and wireless stores, preparing for the strike, national union leaders said.
"This may be the largest retail strike in US history".
To keep raking in the profits, AT&T has ruthlessly pursued subcontracting of call center work.
What's most important is we're all family, whether you're a union member or not. The settlement earlier this spring with AT&T South will bring back 3,000 unionized call-center jobs. But under the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, sitting US presidents can unilaterally intervene in strikes or even potential strikes that they claim could create a "national emergency" and order workers to end their walkouts and return to work.
