Jared Kushner, Charged With Making 'Ultimate Deal,' Has Ties In Israel

"We're not here to force people to do things one way or the other with regards to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", the senior White House official said.

He will separately meet both the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and, while in the region, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in an attempt to revive peace talks.

Israel considers the entire city to be its capita while the global community says the future of east Jerusalem, claimed by the Palestinians, must be resolved through negotiations.

While Israel claims to have annexed East Jerusalem, the worldwide community has not recognised that move and considers it occupied territory.

More than half-a-million Israelis live in Jewish-only settlements throughout the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in violation of global law.

US policy doesn't hold that the city is part of Israel, but the White House put "Jerusalem, Israel", on its website Monday, without offering an explanation.

Mr. Trump's first stop was a meeting in Jerusalem with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

Trump's first overseas trip as president comes as the dynamics between the United States and the region's players are moving in unusual directions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately interjected, however, to suggest it was only an accident.

Arriving from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Trump expressed his hope for cooperation among USA allies in the Middle East. Israel was his second stop on a nine-day tour aimed to test the waters for reviving the dormant Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

Trump said in joint remarks with Netanyahu later Monday that he was "deeply moved" by the experience.

Kushner, an Orthodox Jew, has not helped inspire confidence in his impartiality, having failed to disclose multiple professional ties with Israel that may compromise his position as an impartial broker.

GOP senator: North Korea missile test 'one of most advanced yet'
United States officials said the missile hit the water around 60 miles (around 100 kilometers) from eastern Russia's Vladivostok. The Korean Central News Agency has called North Korea's new missile a "ground to ground medium to long-range ballistic missile".

"It is something that I think is frankly maybe not as hard as people have thought over the years", Trump said when meeting Abbas in Washington earlier this month.

The traditional U.S. position has been that Jerusalem's status must be negotiated between the two sides.

Trump gave a brief statement after landing.

Mr Trump, who is making his first visit to Israel as U.S. president, said: "I never mentioned the word or the name Israel in that conversation".

Donald Trump described achieving Israeli-Palestinian peace as the "ultimate deal" that is possible and America will get it done.

Tensions have festered over Israeli settlement expansion and Palestinian violence sparked by rumors Israel was planning to completely take over an east Jerusalem holy site, sacred to both Jews and Muslims.

Israeli police stand by the body of a Palestinian who was shot and killed after he attempted to stab an Israeli soldier at a checkpoint north of the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Monday, May 22, 2017.

At the same time, he urged Israel to hold back on settlement building in the West Bank, a longstanding concern of Palestinians and much of the world. He'll also visit the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Western Wall, an important Jewish holy site. The repeated failure of negotiations has led to increased Israeli settlement activity and even less territory on which a Palestinian state could potentially be established.

A senior official who was part of the Palestinian delegation said Trump is planning to try to relaunch peace talks, with a goal of reaching an agreement within a year.

The secretary of state has been perhaps the most hostile Trump cabinet member to the Jewish state.
