Manchester police release images of bomber moments before arena blast

May 31, 2017, 00:12

A bell tolled in Manchester yesterday at the exact time when a suicide bomber struck a week before outside a teenage pop concert killing 22 people, as Britain's intelligence agency questioned whether vital clues had been missed.

The 22-year-old, of Libyan origin, was born in the northwestern English city.

Police are trying to re-create attacker Salman Abedi's movements before he detonated a bomb at an Ariana Grande concert.

Abedi detonated his bomb just after the end of a concert by U.S. pop star Ariana Grande in one of Europe's biggest indoor arenas in central Manchester.

"My heart goes out to all the victims", she continued.

That brought the number of arrests in the case to 16, Greater Manchester Police said in a statement Monday.

Investigators meanwhile pushed ahead with their probe.

One week after the Manchester Arena attack, British authorities confirmed Monday that the nation's intelligence agency, MI5, has launched an internal investigation of how it handled information about suicide bomber Salman Abedi.

The suitcase is a "different item" than the one he used in the attack, police said, but added that they believe he was in possession of it "days before the attack".

The May 18-22 timeline is crucial, because it's known that Abedi returned from Libya just a few days before the bombing.

The bombing investigation expanded early Monday when police arrested a 23-year-old man on the south coast of England, hundreds of miles south of Manchester.

Abedi's elder brother Ismail reportedly is among the suspects being held in Britain, while his younger brother and father have been detained in Libya. Sixteen arrests have been made in the investigation so far.

While the police have said they believe most of the people in Abedi's network have been captured, Rudd warned Sunday that some of its members could still be at large.

"I think its the right first step".

"So what I do know about Abedi, the terrorist, is that he was known to the police for some relatively minor matters - theft, receiving stolen goods, minor assault".

MI5 has opened an internal review after Abedi slipped down the list of suspects under investigation, despite the tip-off.

Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives have seen their poll lead cut in the wake of the attack and after a U-turn over their social care plans for the elderly.

Operation Temperer, which involved the highly unusual deployment of armed troops on Britain's streets, was also being wound down yesterday night.

Phillips thinks the leak most likely came from an individual within United States law enforcement, and said it "will make very little difference" to the long-term relationship between the intelligence agencies, which remain committed to sharing information in order to counter the threat.

"What we had to do when we came into government in 2010 was to ensure that we were living within our means", May said when pressed about the cuts by a police officer during a televised question and answer session yesterday.
