Russian navy fires cruise missiles at IS in Syria

The defence ministry said the hardware and forces struck had previously been deployed by IS in Raqqa.

In a May 29 release, the ministry said that, 'In the framework of modernization, submarines and warships of the Russian Navy will be armed with Kalibr cruise missiles'.

It is noted that the strikes targeted militant hideouts east of Palmyra housing heavy equipment and militant manpower transferred from Raqqa, ISIL's stronghold in northern Syria.

The ministry says it had notified the U.S., Turkish and Israeli militaries beforehand of the coming strike.

Cruise missiles launched by the Russian Navy hit a number of ISIS targets in Palmyra, Syria, Wednesday, according to Russian state media. "Moreover, soon after this information was made public, IS militants really exited Raqqa and moved towards Palmyra", Lavrov said. The missiles have been launched from warships in the Caspian Sea and more recently from warships and submarines in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The target of the strike was apparently a site west of Palmyra where Russian Federation had spotted a build up of ISIS combat equipment and manpower.

Islamic State is not included in the ceasefire.
