Elon Musk will quit Trump's councils if US leaves Paris Agreement

President Trump is nearing a decision on whether to formally withdraw the USA from the Paris climate agreement - a landmark deal in which almost every country volunteered to curb its greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to limit global warming.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Britain would continue to press the U.S.to reduce unsafe emissions even if Trump pulls out.

A White House official told the Associated Press there might be "caveats in the language" regarding the withdrawal from the accord, leaving open the possibility that the withdrawal may not be final and permanent. This is also reversing the strides former President Obama's administration made on climate change.

Quitting the Paris accord may not resonate with members of Trump's Republican Party as much as his administration expects.

Almost 200 countries made history after reaching an agreement to mitigate emissions at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Trump claimed before taking office that climate change was a "hoax" created by the Chinese to hurt the US economy.

President Trump is promising he'll make a decision about the Paris Climate Accord in the next few days.

The agreement says no country can leave for four years, but Mr Trump could decide to withdraw the USA from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, on which the deal is built, which would represent a major setback to tackling global emissions.

The December 2015 agreement dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation has, as of May, been signed by all 197 countries in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, except Syria and Nicaragua. Each country agreed to put forth and meet nationally determined contributions that would help keep global temperature levels down and assist in funding responses to climate change's effects on more vulnerable, developing countries. The U.S. signed the accord in 2015, committing to reducing carbon emissions by 26% to 28% within a decade. If the United States withdraws from an agreement that almost 200 other countries are a part of, it would join Nicaragua and Syria as the only other countries that rejects the accord.

Months later, in March 2017, it was reported Ivanka and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned the president of the "damaging diplomatic ramifications" of stepping away from the Paris climate change treaty.

"He said it would take at least three to four years for any country to leave the agreement".

Trump could decide as early as this week whether the United States will remain in the historic Paris Agreement, which reflects a voluntary commitment by the world's governments to reduce their carbon emissions.
