Renewable energy expected to continue growth, despite Trump

China affirmed its place in the Paris Accord on climate change Thursday as leaders around the world prepare for a decision from President Donald Trump on US involvement in the global pact to reduce greenhouse emissions.

China asked that the annual summit, normally held in mid-July, be brought forward to press home President Xi Jinping's defense of open trade at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, in response to Trump's protectionist stance.

Martin Schulz, a former European Parliament president who is hoping to unseat Merkel in Germany's upcoming general election, said he hoped Trump would think better of withdrawing from the accord.

China said Thursday that it will work with the European Union to uphold the worldwide agreement on climate change even if the USA pulls out.

What is the Paris Climate Agreement?

"We are going to be discussing trade", Mr Trump, sitting alongside Mr Phuc in the White House, said.

"China and the European Union need to steadfastly adhere to the Paris agreement", Yang said in a written briefing to reporters.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump was working out the terms of the planned withdrawal with US Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, an oil industry ally and climate change doubter.

An American withdrawal would come fewer than 18 months after the historic 196-nation pact was signed in the French capital - the fruit of a hard-fought agreement between Beijing and Washington under Barack Obama's leadership. Light said that the Trump administration could face fallout if it withdraws from the agreement. The agreement has been ratified by 147 nations to date and focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions with a target of holding global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

The EU-China summit follows a tense worldwide tour by US President Donald Trump in which he spurned pleas by his European counterparts to adhere to the deal. The executive order also rescinded a number of executive actions aimed at reining in climate change or mitigating its effects.

Trump has tweeted that he will announce his decision on the Paris deal on Thursday 3pm (US time). To remain in the deal, the USA must cut its emissions by 26 percent from 2005 levels by 2025. In it the US had agreed to reduce its emissions by 26 percent by 2025 when compared to levels in 2005 - about 1.6 billion tons.

She blamed the reported decision on Trumps "impulsive, reactive personality".

McKenna said she had urged USA officials to stay in the Paris deal, noting that 90 percent of the agreement remained to be negotiated.

"Don't know which way Paris will go, but I've done all I can to advise directly to POTUS, through others in WH & via councils, that we remain", the founder of electric carmaker Tesla and the private space exploration firm SpaceX tweeted.

She said for the USA "to throw our lot in with the very, very small number of countries" would be a breach of an agreement.
