Jason Dufner, David Lingmerth share Memorial lead

Sweden's David Lingmerth and American Jason Dufner both carded seven-under 65s to share the lead after the opening round of the Memorial Tournament.

Justin Thomas tees off on the fifth hole during the third round of the Memorial golf tournament, Saturday, June 3, 2017, in Dublin, Ohio.

Former world number one Jordan Spieth had three birdies and three bogeys in an even par 72 that left him tied for fourth on six-under 138.

Lingmerth, whose first PGA Tour victory came at the Memorial two years ago, also bogeyed his last hole on an ideal day for scoring.

World No 1 Dustin Johnson, two weeks away from his US Open title defence at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, missed the cut, following up his opening 78 with a 2-over 74.

Dufner endured a nightmare with the putter and compounded his misery by driving into a water hazard at the last for a closing bogey and a five-over 77, only one shot shy of the day's worst score.

The 40-year-old had five birdies in addition to a 176-yard eagle to hold a six-shot clubhouse lead at the end of Friday's morning early rounds of the PGA Tour event.

Johnson's round was marred by a triple-bogey at the par-three 16th, where his tee shot found the pond guarding the green, before he compounded his misery by three-putting.

But he has not yet missed a putt from inside 10 feet, a feat he credits to recent work with a putting training device that has helped his consistency.

Day clawed his way back from the bottom of the leaderboard during the third round of the US PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament on Saturday.

"Did everything pretty well", the low-keyed Dufner said after his round.

"It just talked about how they really focus on their breathing, " Dufner said. "Today, I was really focused on it".

Muirfield Village member Jason Day (71) is 2 over after 36 holes, hovering around the cut line.

"I'm keeping an eye on what he's doing, " Fowler said. "I've had a lot of good rounds". He also spent time with Davis Love III, Fred Couples (1998 champion) and Jim Furyk (2002 champion).

He was 3 over through four holes, answered with four birdies over his next five holes, then traded birdies and bogeys on the back nine until finishing with one last birdie for a round of 70 that featured just six pars.

Adam Scott needed to produce something special to make the weekend at the Memorial Tournament in OH and after a shaky start on day two he produced, a 6-under 66 vaulting him nearly 60 places up the leaderboard.

"It's a tough golf course, definitely", Nordqvist said.
