US, Somali Forces Attack al-Shabaab Site

United States and Somali forces have conducted a joint operation against the Islamist group al-Shabaab, destroying a major training camp and command outpost days after a deadly attack on a military base in northern Somalia.

In May, a USA service member was killed during an operation conducted against al-Shabaab while supporting the Somali National Army.

Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed confirmed the air strike, saying that Somali and partner forces destroyed an al-Shabaab training camp near Sakow, in the Middle Jubaregion.

The Pentagon estimated that the strike, in response to attacks in Somalia by al Qaida-linked al Shabaab, killed eight militants. Al-Shabaab has also increased its combat capability by seizing heavy weaponry, armored vehicles, explosives, small arms, ammunition, and other miscellaneous supplies during its operations overrunning Burundian National Defense Forces FOB Leego, Ugandan People's Defense Force FOB Janaale, and Kenyan Defense Force FOB Ceel Ad.

In previous years, Somali-based al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab militants have stepped up terror attacks in Kenya and Somalia during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The U.S. military has previously conducted counter-terrorism missions and airstrikes in Somalia targeting al-Shabaab leaders, but those missions have been carried out under the different authorities targeting al-Qaeda.

Al-Shabaab has been staging numerous attacks in the country in an attempt to establish the strict Sharia law in it.

It was a drone strike, a US official said on condition of anonymity.

Somalia's president said the country's army was in "hot pursuit" of the fighters after the attack.

"We promise that al-Shabaab won't get away with this. If you, however take advantage of my amnesty offer and denounce violence, we will integrate you into our reform program", he said. "You have no future with the terrorists, but you can still be a part of Somalia's future; a peaceful and prosperous future".
