EC issues notification for President's election

Recently, Congress president Sonia Gandhi met various leaders from opposition parties to give a tough fight to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government's candidate for the post of President.

As the process for the election of India's next President officially began on Wednesday with the Election Commission opening the process of filing of nominations, 6 candidates filed their respective nominations on the first day itself.

Voting will take place on July 17 from 10 am to 5 pm at places fixed under the rules. With President Pranab Mukherjee's term set to end in July, both the Centre and Congress-led opposition parties have intensified their search for a suitable Presidential candidate.

The Election Commission has said special pens will be provided to voters in view of a row that sorrounded voting for a Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana previous year.

Yesterday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah formed a three-member committee for consultations with the Opposition over candidates for the Presidential elections.
