US Air Force downs Syrian fighter jet

Moscow's reaction came a day after a US fighter jet shot down a Syrian plane for bombing USA -backed fighters battling Islamic State. While the US has said since it began recruiting, training and advising what it calls moderate Syrian opposition forces to fight IS that it would protect them from potential Syrian government retribution, this was the first time it resorted to engaging in air-to-air combat to make good on that promise.

The Syrian aircraft was destroyed, the Russian ministry said.

The missile attack came amid recent confrontations in Syria between US -backed forces and Iranian-backed pro-government factions.

An escalation? The US downed a Syrian fighter in order to protect rebel forces. It has previously claimed it would do so following the us missile strike on a Syrian air field in April as retaliation for a chemical weapons attack by the Assad government.

Last month, Senators Jeff Flake and Tim Kane introduced a bill to update the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF), passed in response to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

The US and Russia, which had been providing air cover for Syria's President Bashar al-Assad since 2015 in his offensive against the Islamic State group, had a standing agreement that should prevent in-the-air incidents involving US and Russian jets engaged in operations in Syria.

Clashes between Syrian troops and SDF would escalate tensions in the country and open a new front line in the many complex battlefields of the civil war, now in its seventh year. "That's why there's no threat of direct confrontation between Russian Federation and American aircraft".

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces - an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters - is battling to oust the militants from Raqqa, and broke into the IS stronghold city last week. He said government forces began attacking the SDF on Saturday, using warplanes, artillery and tanks in areas that SDF had liberated from IS. The attack drove the SDF from Ja'Din, which is west of Raqqa, the coalition statement said.

"If the regime continues attacking our positions in Raqqa province, we will be forced to retaliate.and defend our forces".
