Ostapenko wins; Nadal vs. Wawrinka in final

From then on, Halep looked resigned to her fate and Ostapenko held her serve easily before breaking again, firing a stunning backhand victor on the return - her 54th victor in all - to clinch the victory of her life.

She won the final, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Jelena Ostapenko turned 20 on the Thursday that she reached her first Major final.

For Halep, bidding to join compatriots Ilie Nastase and Virginia Ruzici as major winners, it was a second final defeat in four years at Roland Garros.

The 2017 French Open women's final at Roland Garros will showcase unranked Jelena Ostapenko against No. 3 Simona Halep.

"I knew that Gustavo Kuerten won his first Roland Garros the day I was born, I have no words. I'm just really, really happy". "Now I really like it".

"I'm looking forward to Wimbledon because grass is one of my favorite surfaces", she said.

The final against Halep was shown on a big screen in the centre of Riga and Ostapenko is expecting plenty of fuss when she makes a brief trip back to her home city on Monday. But after breaking Halep in the next game, Ostapenko didn't waver, setting up her first set point with a monster forehand down the line before forcing a decider with another huge forehand, her 22nd victor of the set. The paper notes she is also the first Latvian ever to win a singles Grand Slam. Halep took the first set, putting Ostapenko in a hole that no woman at the French Open has dug out of in 16 years. And I was just "Okay, I have nothing to lose, I'm just going to hit a victor". To play a final, it's an fantastic thing.

The 47th-ranked Ostapenko, only two days past her 20th birthday, raised her arms in victory after drilling a final backhand victor down the line. "I stayed there, I was fighting, but I think she was better than me". The 20-year old hit three aces and 54 winners to claim her maiden title.

The emotions were the polar opposite for Halep, who was the pre-tournament favourite and seemed to have her name on the trophy before it was snatched away in a barrage of Ostapenko winners. She fired 54 winners to script a stunning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over World No 3 Simona Halep.

- "I can not believe I'm the Roland Garros champion".

Ostapenko, playing in only her eighth Grand Slam tournament, had never won a tour-level title before winning this French Open. I was 3-0 down [in the second set] but I was fighting for every point. Then when I went on court, I felt quite free, until I was losing the second set, then I felt a little bit nervous again.

"Of course, there will be more pressure but I will try and deal with it".

In retrospect, Halep probably would have liked to have been more aggressive, but she knew going in that she would be outhit - that there would be periods when she would just watch the ball fly by, unable to do anything about it.
