Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori French Open quarterfinals match preview

Wawrinka is going to be tough to beat as long as he keeps his unforced errors below 30, which he's done three times this tournament.

Murray received an award for finishing 2016 as world number one, with brother Jamie sharing the men's doubles trophy with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares.

Nishikori has won just two of 10 matches against Murray, but can't remember beating the British player at the U.S. Open past year. "I think it does have an impact".

The world number nine said of his opponent: "We have played so many times".

"Obviously he's played fantastically at this tournament so far". He played very well.

Briton Murray dropped serve twice in the opening set as the gremlins that have dogged his season briefly returned, but he was generally in charge after that against the eighth seed. So I was frustrated about it, but I don't know how much impact that had.

Thiem said: "It was a very good match for me".

"But still it was a really, really tough battle".

The third seed Halep trailed by a set and 5-1 against the fifth seed but somehow dug herself out of a hole before storming to victory. "I don't even know if I won or lost".

Sizzling Murray powers on

A year ago I was playing really well. Three days in a row. I didn't do anything special, but that was a critical period of the match, because he started way better than me. But I'm sure it's going to be OK.

That took the set to a crucial, yet surprisingly one-sided, tie-break as the Scot waltzed to a 7-0 scoreline - enough to take him one set away from the semi-final in the process.

Echoing similar views, former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic said that although Murray started the tournament searching for form, he has managed to bring himself back on track as the French Open progressed.

"He was dictating all the points in the first set, making me move a lot". Hard question. So far when I have beaten a top guy, I have always played a way worse match the following day. He returns well and he's very solid off both wings.

Djokovic, who has won 12 grand slams, was trounced 7-6, 6-3, 6-0, which means for the first time in seven years the Serbian will be absent from the last-four tussles in Paris.

Murray, who's gradually finding form in Roland Garros, recovered from a slow start to edge Nishikori 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/0), 6-1.

Murray was barely tested in the fourth round, beating 21-year-old Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. He's a bit more hesitant.

And they're all well aware. "It's a big opportunity". His 100-2 record includes his only pair of Roland Garros defeats: against Robin Soderling in the 2009 fourth round and Djokovic in the 2015 quarterfinals.
